Wooden Church - Hervartov

Wooden Roman-Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi from the end of the 15th century is the oldest and best preserved wooden church in Slovakia. In 2008 it was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was built in a Gothic style. Church is made up of red spruce and remarkable is also its preserved pavement of stone plates. Interior decorations have undergone several adaptations and changes.

In 1665 rare wall paintings were added. Several works have been preserved until nowdays, such as the central pianting with scenes of the Virgin Mary, St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Barbara from the years 1460 - 1470, four gables of the former Gothic altar and late-Gothic easel painting of St. Francis of Assisi. Another interesting interior jewels include the painting of St, Christopher and St. Catherine of Siena, The Calvary and panel painting The Last Supper from 1653. In the 18th century a Baroque decorations, as well as a late-Baroque painting of J. Mirejovský were added.
