JEWISH SUBURBIA

Jews in Bardejov started to play an important role in the firtst quarter of the 18th century. In the years 1771-1773  they built a synagogue  outside the walls. When it burnt, in 1810 a construction of a new one in its place begun. It set the basis for specific suburbia complex now considered an urban uniqueness across the entire eastern Slovakia region.

It consists of a main synagogue, prayer room, assembly room for believers, schools, ritual bath and the outbuilding - jatok. Vaults of the synagogue have rich ornamental paintings with plant motifs from the late 19th century. Of inestimable cultural, religious, and historic value, Jewish Suburbia has been nationally recognized. In 1970, the Old Synagogue was declared a National Cultural Monument.

Jewish prayer room can also be found at Kláštorná street. The building constructed in the original interior and wall paintings. Jewish cemetery with tombstones in Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism style is preserved in the town. The Federation of the Jewish Communities in Slovakia is the site’s owner.
